A New Site for North Dakota Poets

He was crippled in a fall several years ago and suffered a stroke in 2023. Your support will help cover costs of this site and provide more frequent updates.

North Dakota Poetry and Writing Groups.

The current North Dakota Poet Laureate is
Larry Woiwode.
Larry Woiwode was born in 1941 in Carrington, North Dakota and is also the author of five novels. He was appointed North Dakota State Poet Laureate in 1995. More information about him can be found on the link above.

** The North Dakota Council on the Arts** supports artists and writers in North Dakota working in all genres. The Council also provides a number of grants. For information, please see the link above.

For the past several years, thousands of North Dakota high school students have participated in the Poetry Out Loud State recitation competitions, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. Your high school is invited to participate.
Poetry Out Loud is a wonderful program for students. The program helps the develop Stage and speaking skills, confidence and a love of poetry. Poetry really needs to be spoken to truly be enjoyed. Please show your support for this important project in North Dakota. Contact Poetry Out Loud If your high school is not yet involved, contact Poetry Out Loud to get involved. The North Dakota Poetry Slam is part of a National competition that allows poets to perform poetry for prizes and awards. Poetry is more impactful when it is spoken and shared. See the National Poetry Slam link for competition dates and times.

** The North Dakota Freelance Writers Association** is a group of freelance writers with membership statewide.
The group provides networking, conferences and resources for nonfiction writers throughout North Dakota. Basic membership in the group is free; VIP membership, which includes a number of other writing benefits, is $50.00 per year.

The Writing Center at the University of North Dakota provides a number of educational programs for North Dakota writers. From their mission statement: "The mission of the Writing Center is to serve as a resource on writing for the university community. We help people as they seek to improve their writing by offering positive, constructive responses to their work in any genre or discipline and at any stage of the writing process. We believe that the development of writing abilities is a life-long process, and that writing is a skill and art that enables people to create and communicate ideas."&&&&&&&&&&&&

About the author: Steven Robert Heine is an American poet and author. He has spent much of his life supporting poetry projects and events. He is the author of 8 volumes of poetry. In 2011 he was seriously injured in a fall that left him in great pain and almost unable to walk. He suffered a stroke in 2023. Heine receives no disability and relies on a small pension and retirement income. He is no longer able to make public appearances.

Steven Robert Heine is a West Coast poet & author. He has traveled extensively through the United States, including travels to North Dakota. He has spent his life promoting poetry; serving as founder for many poetry contests. He is the author of fifteen books, including poetry, history and his own short auto-biographies. Heine was crippled in a fall in 2011 and now makes very few public appearances.
